of joe manchin come forward and they didn't. >> we have joe manchin who had an a plus rating, i had an a plus rating over four terms, come out and say immediately, we have to sit and talk about this. then you have wayne lapierre to come out and talk and do what he did, offended middle america. you have extremists on talk radio talking about this as a war. extremist politicians talking about impeaching barack obama. you have guys that have worked for supreme court justices that say even talking about this is unconstitution unconstitutional. no, it's not. scalia said you have a right to protect your family and have a handgun in your house. the other things, that's subject to government regulation. they overreached. the mothre they overreached, i warned them, i have been a member all my life -- >> that's nice. >> i will do it again. >> willie, what's my biggest fault. >> you love a little too much. >> that is it. >> i love a little too much. i shared some of that love last week. anyw anyway, it is a still not too late. they can come to the table and be part of a comprehensive package.

to start to feel differently. when you get a joe manchin of west virginia coming out and saying "i hunt, i don't need more than three bullets in a magazine" and you get other long-standing strong proponents of the second amendment saying it's time for some changes, we're moving into a different world. >> brown: dad kopel, do you thinthe pliti have changed here or do you expect -- well, there certainly will be challenges legislatively. will there also be challenges legally? >> there will certainly be legal challenges because one important thing -- the way things have changechanged is we now have the supreme court having affirmed that the second amendment is an individual right and the core of that individual right is self-defense. so joe manchin is welcome to his opinion-- which he's stated to people from his own state just a few days ago-- that he thinks the only reason people should have guns is for sports. bu that's not what the second amendment says. the second amendment says that self-defense is the core of the second amendment. so when you talk about taking away things because maybe t

schumer and joe manchin. senator coburn says he wants the bill to keep guns out of the hands of people that are a danger to themselves including criminals and the mentally ill. nra executive vice president wayne lapierre will testify before the senate today and has released his prepared remarks which, in part, read, quote, when it comes to the issue of background checks, let's be honest. background checks will never be "universal" because criminals will never submit to them. meanwhile, this morning, "the new york times" is reporting that despite chicago's strict gun laws, the city is still struggling to control its gun violence -- guns attributed to more than 500 homicides last year alone in the windy city with at least 40 killings already reported this year. we were talking about this earlier, joe. how do you think this is going to pan out as we look forward on guns? something that you're stepping into a bit yourself. >> well, i think it's great news that you have tom coburn, an oklahoma conservative, who's been a champion on a lot of conservative issues coming out and supporting univ

connecticut governor dan malloy and joe manchin walked over. here's what he had to say. >> i think i'm with the rest of the people, connecticut and the united states, we want action. no gun should be sold without a background check. you can't get on a plane without a background check. you shouldn't be able to buy a gun. >> is there anything that you sense in there that everybody comes together, feels a little kumbaya for 48 hours, maybe it feels like that, but is there anything that suggests to you that the two sides will be able to work together in barack obama's second term? >> well, i'm a moderate centrist democrat. i do believe we can find common ground. i also believe that we have to stand firmly on what we believe in and after what happened in newtown and actually after a series of really tragic mass shootings and of course, what happens daily in this country, loss of life from gun violence, i believe strongly that there are actions we can take. the president laid out a very reasonable actions we should take and yet we have not seen any movement on the republican side and that

with let's say joe manchin n.r.a. backed senator from west virginia or john dingell n.r.a. backed from michigan and groups pro gun, maybe they're going to try to do a big deal, maybe try to do something comprehensive, but it looks like and certainly sounded like from the president from his tone and the press conference today that he recognizes it's not likely that the measure has the votes to get through congress and he's going to do what he can and do it his own way. >> megyn: what do you expect that to mean? he talked about it a little today. he didn't go to the controversial place. but it didn't sound like something's really going to upset the gun lobby in the way na, you know, high capacity magazine restrictions would upset them or extensive background checks would upset them. >> well, we don't know what the vice-president -- could be as soon as today that the vice-president hands over his recommendations to the president. we don't know what all is in there. and certainly the vice-president was very enthusiastic about the idea of forcing private sellers, when a person, one person s

, appalachia, joe manchin, that's the deal, this is a cultural, region population density question, not a democrat-republican question. >> megyn: this is interesting, you pointed this out in your power play piece last week, a lot of times in the big cities, people's experiences with guns is those are things held by bad guys who want it hurt us, take our things and hurt our children. and the experience of those who are, you know, in more rural areas is, this is a family air loom, my dad taught me how to shoot and taught him how to shoot and we enjoy for recreation, it's one of our constitutional rights we like to exercise and it's nobody's business. and there are exceptions, but there is a split. and you can see it not just in the constituents, but the lawmakers who are sort of uniform on some of the issues and are the not on this one. >> that's right, not too many scatter guns over the upper west side or chevy chase or places like that, and the president opted not to have the dialog and bring in the people from his team. normally you would think that's the opportunity to build cons

't make his riches cutting his pay. >> brian: joe manchin is the only democrat that i can see that signed on. what do you think on the other side, some people on the left are calling it a gimmick. >> yeah. they're calling it a gimmick. i think leadership in the senate called it stupid. only in washington, d.c. do they call budgeting stupid. that's why we're $16 trillion in the hole right now. everything is done in washington, d.c. by crisis. everything is a crisis. whether it's the debt ceiling, whether it's sequestration, doesn't matter, whatever it is. everything is done by crisis. and we're going to push this forward. there is going to be a vote in the house tomorrow. president has already said if it's in the legislation, he'll sign it. so there is an opportunity. i've talked to joe. joe signed on to this thing and he's promised me that he'll trio get some of his colleagues on his side of the aisle to support the idea. >> brian: senator, i thought what was most encouraging to come out of the sunday shows david plouffe says the president finds it encouraging. so the white house would su
